BIOGRAPHY

SHE WAS BORN AND RAISED IN A LAND WHERE THE COLLISION OF THE ANCIENT AND modern worlds resulted in what is now the important cultural center of Mexico City. With its traditions and history, its majestic colonial and pre-Hispanic architecture, and its unique handmade crafts, 'D.F.' is for her not just a city, but an exhibition of art in its myriad forms of expression. From her earliest days, the seed of an artistic weed has been growing within her brain.

Although visiting many of the museums and theaters in such a huge city has helped her to understand her own culture, it was traveling and living in other countries that taught her to appreciate other cultures as well. Despite her love for art, she had given up on painting for sixteen years, discouraged by the corruption she witnessed in the art industry of Mexico City as a kid.

Now living in Austin, she is reminded of the beautiful area where she spent much of her childhood, the Bohemian-inspired neighborhood Coyoacán in southern Mexico City. The refreshing environment of Austin has given her the freedom to express herself and has made her feel at home. After getting a B.A. in Graphic Design, and searching for passion and fulfillment in life, she has come to regret her decision to abandon art. Now, she has taken up the paintbrush—or was taken up by the paintbrush—and has once again embarked on one of the most joyful journeys of her life, to find her creativity and herself.

ARTIST STATEMENT

She has been influenced by a culture that has suffered the process of change through the years, yet still finds herself amazed by the beauty of her native Mexico–charged with color and texture, and possessing a startling natural diversity. She strives to present her work to the world with this same vision.

She is inspired by all forms in nature, from the tiniest microbe, the simplest things that are an integral part of our everyday environments, to the grand complexity of all life, from the aesthetics of the human figure and even to the simple beauty in a mineral; she is drawn to the shapes, textures, patterns, designs, and structures produced by nature.

But as a surrealist, she strives to not just to show the astonishing beauty of the world as it is, but also the limitless possibilities of the human imagination. Within her own mind, she creates a new ecology, teeming with myriad forms of novel life, and in doing so, she contributes to the diversity to this world. To be inspired by and to inspire others, she hopes to further the artistic community as a whole. But above all, she believes the highest achievement of an artist is to live with passion and promote passion.
YVONNE PÓO

BORN AND RAISED IN A LAND WHERE THE COLLISION OF THE ANCIENT AND MODERN WORLDS resulted in what is now one of the most important cultural centers in the world, Yvonne Poo draws her inspiration from the gigantic metropolis which we know as Mexico City. With its traditions and history, its majestic colonial and pre-Hispanic architecture, and its unique handmade crafts, ’D.F.’, as she calls it, is for her not just a city, but an  exhibition of art in its myriad forms of expression.

Although visiting the many museums and theaters in such a huge city has helped her to understand her own culture, it was traveling and living in other countries that taught her to appreciate other cultures as well. For her, the important role that art itself plays as part of any culture, grants the artist an opportunity to offer their own contribution to that culture.

Now living in Austin, she is reminded of the beautiful area where she spent much of her childhood, the Bohemian-inspired neighborhood Coyoacán in southern Mexico City. The refreshing environment of Austin has given her the freedom to express herself and has made her feel at home.

She has been influenced by a culture that has suffered the process of change through the years, yet still finds herself amazed by the beauty of her country–charged with color and texture, and possessing a startling natural diversity. She strives to present her work to the world with this same vision. She is inspired by all forms in nature, from the tiniest microbe, to the grand complexity of all life, the simplest things that are an integral part of our everyday environments. She admires the aesthetics of the human figure and appreciates the simple beauty in a mineral. She seeks to paint almost everything the eyes have the gift to see in just one lifetime and to represent them in a pleasant and meaningful way, exalting their beauty for others to enjoy for their own worth.

Beauty and more beauty, and the incredible experience of sharing one’s deepest thoughts, feelings and wishes, these are the goals she pursues with her pieces. Her concepts are born out of these simple goals and art is the tool she uses to bring them to life and pass them on to the next generation. She believes her job as an artist is to inspire and encourage others; this makes life rich and meaningful and is what she enjoys the most in this world. The highest achievement of an artist is to live with passion and promote passion. Without passion, the world wouldn’t be a place of dreams.

Though her Mexican roots form the platform on which she expresses herself, she craves the passion of places like Austin where anything and everything can find a place to fit.
